Gen 3 Predictions: Move Sets of Fully Evolved Pokemon (Sceptile – Shiftry)

The Pokemon Company International revealed the upcoming Pokemon Go‘s Halloween Event and teased us with possibility of Generation 3 release.

If Gen 3 is released it will bring in some new movesets to the game. Here are the predictions by reddit user pdiz8133 of potential movesets for Generation 3 Pokemon.

Prediction will be in following parts:

  1. Sceptile to Shiftry
  2. Swellow to Exploud
  3. Hariyama to Manectric
  4. Plusle to Camerupt
  5. Torkoal to Seviper
  6. Lunatone to Milotic
  7. Castform to Walrein
  8. Huntail to Metagross
  9. Legendaries

One of the big changes that came with generation 2 was a move set reshuffle. New moves were added, most older moves were adjusted and re-balanced, and older Pokemon had their learn-able moves change.

I decided to take a look at Generation 3 Pokemon and see if I could predict what might be in store when generation 3 launches. Something to keep in mind is that moves as we know them will change so for example, Fire Spin/Overheat may no longer be an amazing move set and Heat Wave could become the Outrage of Fire and now reigns king.



One thing to note, I am disregarding wildly out of place moves (such as Solar Beam Typhlosion or Fire Blast Slowking). While I am sure they will happen, I see no point trying to predict them.


Here I will include a list of new moves I am predicting we might see with Generation 3. You will see these moves throughout my posts. I will not guess the DPS or damage of them, just that they will make an appearance. This will only update to reflect moves I plan to cover in the current post or have been covered in earlier posts.

Sceptile – Grass – Max CP: 2584

Attack: 223

Defense: 180

Predicted Moves

Quick Moves:

  • Fury Cutter: Fury Cutter is a staple move of Grovyle which later loses usefulness to X-scissor in the original games. While replacing moves with stronger moves is not a theme in Pokemon Go (other than changing moves with TMs) I think Fury Cutter is likely to be one of Sceptile’s Quick Moves.
  • Absorb: I assume Sceptile will get at least one quick move of it’s type and Bullet Seed didn’t really fit even though Sceptile can learn it. Sceptile does not learn either Vine Whip or Razor Leaf so I thought this would be a perfect time to introduce an older move that was Treeko’s bread and butter; Absorb. Edit: as many have pointed out, bullet seed has a major role for Treeko in the anime and thus might make an appearance in Pokemon Go

Charge Moves:

  • Leaf Blade: This was a originally introduced in generation 3 and Sceptile was a major recipient of the move. This is hands down going to be one of Sceptile’s moves.
  • X-Scissor: Another classic move associated with Sceptile, and one that Sceptile learns through leveling up.
  • Dragon Claw: While not a classic move associated with Sceptile, I thought this might fit thematically in a similar way to Charizard learning Dragon Claw. Both Sceptile and Charizard add a Dragon typing with mega Evolution (Mega Charizard X). I don’t know if we will ever see Mega Evolution in Pokemon Go but I would not be surprised if Sceptile learned a Dragon charge move.

Blaziken – Fire/Fighting – Max CP: 2631

Predicted Moves

Quick Moves:

  • Counter: Of the possible semi-weak fighting type moves that Blaziken can learn (Counter, Double Kick, Low Kick, Power-Up Punch, Rock Smash, Vacuum Wave), Counter seems the most likely unless Double Kick is introduced. While not a common move in game, it is a move most fighting types learn and has been assigned to almost all the current fighting types.
  • Ember: The basic Fire type move learned by Torchic and the most likely candidate for Blaziken. While Blaziken learns Fire Spin, it is not learned through leveling up and Ember has always been more commonly associated with the Blaziken line.

Charge Moves:

  • Blaze Kick: Another move introduced in Generation 3 and a signature move of Blaziken. While some signature moves were never introduced (*cough*Crabhammer*cough*) others like Bone Club for Marowak were. I have high hopes that Blaze Kick will make the cut.
  • Sky Uppercut: Another classic move associated with Blaziken and another new move introduced with generation 3. This move is much less unique to Blaziken and will most certainly make appearances on other pokemon, old and new.
  • Brave Bird: While Blaziken is not a Flying type, it is often associated with flying types because it is a Fire kung fu chicken. The Blaziken line learns Peck and Brave Bird through leveling up and Brave Bird seemed like a pretty likely choice for one of Blaziken’s three charge moves.

Swampert – Water/Ground – Max CP: 2815

Predicted Moves

Quick Moves:

  • Mud Shot: Both Mud-Slap and Mud Shot were both moves that Marshtomp and Mudkip used very often. Both are learned through leveling however Mud Shot was originally introduced in generation 3 and the first time you encountered it was with Mudkip/Marshtomp
  • Water Gun: The basic go-to Water type quick move and one of two Water type moves the Swampert line learns through Normal evolution (Mudkip can learn Hydro Pump if you delay evolving it until ~level 40).

Charge Moves:

  • Muddy Water (or Hydro Pump): Another move introduced in generation 3 and it is very commonly associated with Swampert. While I expected Blaze Kick to be introduced, I am not as confident for Muddy Water simply because it never held up when being used in the original games and players often replaced it with something like Surf. In all likelihood, I could see Swampert just getting Hydro Pump instead of introducing a new move all together or if they do introduce a move, Surf could make an appearance and be given to Pokemon like Lapras and Wailord.
  • Earthquake: The strongest ground move that Swampert learned and the most likely charge move to be given to Swampert in Pokemon Go.
  • Rock Slide: This one is less obvious and I was unsure if it might end up being something like Hammer Arm (a new fighting type move that Swampert learned in later genetations) or Rock Slide, a move that had to be taught to Swampert but was often used do it’s useful coverage. In generation 6 and after, Rock Slide could be learned by Swampert through leveling so I thought it would be a good choice.

Predicted Moves

Quick Moves:

  • Bite: The quintessential Dark type move used by the Mightyena line. Other Dark type possibilities are Snarl and Sucker Punch.
  • Sucker Punch: This could go many ways (including the other Dark quick move learned by this line; Snarl) but I think Mightyena is most likely going to have two Dark quick moves. Tackle is another likely possibility since this is almost like generation 3’s Rattata (that would be the Zigzagoon line).

Charge Moves:

  • Crunch: Another quintessential Dark type move learned by Mightyena. Hands down will be one of it’s charge moves.
  • Play Rough: The only other Charge move learned by Mightyena through leveling up and a pretty likely candidate for Pokemon Go Mightyena.
  • Foul Play: While this move is not necessarily commonly associated with Mightyena, it is associated with Dark types (beyond just being a Dark move) and most Dark Pokemon in Pokemon Go currently have the move.

Linoone – Normal – Max CP: 1533

Attack: 142

Predicted Moves

Quick Moves:

  • Tackle: Both early Normal type variations (Raticate and Furret) learned Quick Attack however Linoone cannot learn Quick Attack so I thought it most likely to get Tackle instead.
  • Pursuit: Pursuit is a move that was originally introduced in generation 3. It was not necessarily commonly associated with any one Pokemon but I think it would make a nice addition to the current movepool. I also think that it is the most likely quick move that Linoone could learn other than Tackle.

Charge Moves:

  • Dig: This has been a common move among all the early Normal type variations.
  • Play Rough: This is the differing move between Linoone and Raticate/Furret. Linoone learns this move through Normal leveling up and is one of the few strong attacking moves it learns Normally.
  • Hyper Beam: Again, a common move among all the early Normal type variations.

Beautifly – Bug/Flying – Max CP: 1573

Attack: 189

Predicted Moves

Quick Moves:

  • Bug Bite/Infestation/Struggle Bug: It seems to be a theme that weak Bug types will receive one of these and it doesn’t really have any sort of obvious theme as to which ones will get which.
  • Absorb: This is one of the first moves Beautifly learns after the cacoon stage. Like Butterfree and Confusion, I expect Beautifly to receive this newly introduced move.

Charge Moves:

  • Bug Buzz: This is the main damaging Bug move that Beautifly ends up using (it’s possible that Beautifly will get Silver Wind instead)
  • Air Cutter: The only flying move not named gust that Beautifly learns through leveling up.
  • Energy Ball: If Beautifly does not double up on a flying or Bug charge move, I think Energy Ball is a good candidate for the third spot. It is an often taught move even though it is not learned through leveling.

Predicted Moves

Quick Moves:

  • Bug Bite/Infestation/Struggle Bug: Same reason as Beautifly but I think that these two may get different Bug quick moves.
  • Confusion: When Beautifly learns absorb, Dustox learns confusion.

Charge Moves:

  • Silver Wind: I think Beautifly and Dustox will be very similar but slightly different when it comes to moves since they evolve from the same first stage. Could also just be Bug Buzz.
  • Psybeam: A very common move that Dustox’s have and they learn it through leveling.
  • Sludge Bomb: Unless venoshock gets introduced, I believe Sludge Bomb is most likely to be Dustox’s Poison charge move.

Ludicolo – Grass/Water – Max CP: 2229

Predicted Moves

Quick Moves:

  • Absorb: While Ludicolo does learn a lot of possible Grass quick moves, none are as linked with the Ludicolo line as Absorb is. It’s the first Grass or Water type move learned by Lotad.
  • Bubble: The first Water type move learned by Ludicolo and the only Water type quick move learned through leveling.

Charge Moves:

  • Hydro Pump: The quintessential Water charge move and only the second possible option that the Ludicolo line learns (the first being Bubble Beam).
  • Solar Beam/Energy Ball/Seed Bomb: I could see this going any of the three ways but at least one of these will be Ludicolo’s Grass type charge move.
  • Blizzard: A lot of Water types end up learning Ice moves as well and Blizzard seemed the most likely move for Ludicolo.

Quick Moves:

  • Feint Attack: The token dark move of the Shiftry line. Not much more to it.
  • Razor Leaf: The token grass move of the Shiftry line. Pretty straight-forward. Potentially one of these could be switched for extrasensory but I doubt it.

Charge Moves:

  • Leaf Blade: This is the one of the major high damaging Grass moves that Shiftry learns. Leaf Tornado and Leaf Storm are not yet introduced and I don’t forsee either being introduced in this generation.
  • Foul Play: Shiftry does not learn many strong Dark type moves by leveling up so it’s options are either Dark Pulse or Foul Play and Foul Play seems the more likely contender.
  • Hurricane: Yes, you read that right. For those who are confused, Shiftry learns this move leveling up. Shiftry’s Pokedex entries often talk about how Shiftry whips up high winds with it’s fan like arms. I think this is almost a lock for one of Shiftry’s charge moves.
